The best results were obtained where data from the two investigation methods could be combined and caves and fortresses could be contextualized in the broader archaeology of their respective landscapes. Methods and questionsĭuring the 201 1 campaign, we continued to use the dual methodology which we developed in 20 and which combines systematic fieldwalking of contiguous areas with targeted investigations of promising sites known to local residents (for details see During and Glatz 2010 Glatz et al.

Third, we have obtained significant new data for the Roman and Byzantine periods. Second, we have found materials dating to various ephemeral periods in the western Black Sea region such as the Early Holocene, the Middle and Late Bronze Ages, and possibly, the Early Iron Age. These include a more systematic understanding of the Cide and §en-pazar landscapes, the taphonomy of these landscapes and the distribution of archaeological assemblages within them. We also undertook a sampling program that will allow us to investigate a range of issues in our post fieldwork studies.Īs in previous years, important discoveries and advances in our understanding of the region were made during the 2011 campaign. Four weeks of fieldwork were followed by a two-week study period, during which specialists were able to study the assemblages from all three seasons. This was the final campaign and one of our main objectives was, therefore, to complete our dataset by focusing on landscape zones of the Cide and Çenpazar area that had not been systematically investigated in pre¬ vious seasons as well as on underrepresented periods and sites. The third season of the Cide Archaeological Project took place in June and July 2011.
